Shaq Metaverse? Shaquille O’Neal’s latest trademark filings indicate big moves by the Great Aristotle about virtual commerce, NFTs, and the metaverse.
Shaq Diesel brings his talents to Web3.
On behalf of Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, marketing and entertainment firm Authentic Brands has filed three Shaq Metaverse trademarks covering “virtual goods,” notes trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben Intellectual Property.
The filings include apparel, sporting goods, toys, and a blockchain-based marketplace for digital art, music, and videos authenticated via NFT.
Call it the Great Unfungible.

As the three dossiers read verbatim, they purport to include.
- (1) Downloadable virtual goods, namely, software with footwear, apparel, hats, eyewear, handbags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys, and accessories for use online and in online virtual worlds; downloads media files containing artwork, text, audio, and video related to Shaquille ONeal authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); downloadable audio and video recordings featuring Shaquille ONeal authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); downloadable image files featuring Shaquille ONeal shown by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); downloads image files featuring Shaquille ONeal shown by non-fungible tokens (NFTs)
- (2) Entertainment services, namely, the online supply of non-downloadable virtual footwear, clothing, hats, eyewear, handbags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys, and accessories for use in virtual environments; supply of a website with non-downloadable videos with SHAQUILLE ONEAL; supply of a website with non-downloadable photographs; a collection of non-downloadable online game software

Yes, it’s a big bunch of blockchain-backed buzzwords to internalize all at once. But Shaq Diesel is a big man.
And maybe the virtual world of NFTs and the ever-expanding metaverse is the only one big enough for him.
